Medical update for Mexico

posted May 4, 2009 2:11 PM by Carlos Gabriel Lopez ‎(CIMMYT)‎

As Mexico and the global community continues to monitor and take precautions against swine flu, CIMMYT is also taking steps to prevent the spread of disease. Until further notice, at El Batán no meetings or large gatherings are to be held in enclosed areas. Tables will be placed outside to provide alternative lunch locations. Everyone is urged to wash their hands frequently, avoid touching their nose or mouth, and to avoid sharing high-contact items, such as phones and computers. Also, all center staff is asked to allow their temperature to be taken as a precautionary measure. Security staff is doing this at the main entrance near the highway with an infrared scanner, and a station is also available in the small hallway near the cafeteria. The center has been distributing disposable masksthroughout the facilities. Masks, which are intended to prevent an infected person from spreading the disease to others, should be disposed of in designated locations. They are intended to be used only once. Members who take CIMMYT provided transportation arerequired to wear medical masks during their commute; in the office it is voluntary. Medical services are available on campus from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Symptoms of swine flu are similar to the regular flu and include a sudden outbreak of fever, cough, sore throat, severe body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. The government has medication to treat swine flu, but individuals should not purchase medication for prevention or self-treatment, as it is likely any medication sold on the street is counterfeit. CIMMYT currently has Tamiflu, the approved treatment medication, available if anyone at the center is diagnosed with swine flu. The center will try to import more doses as soon as possible.
